The project actually started a week before we made our centerpieces. The students were given some change and they went shopping at our classroom store (Monroe Depot!) for items to put in their pumpkin. This gave the students a real life experience counting coins. At the end of the week we had a great time making our pumpkin centerpieces! The students had to pull the pulp and seeds out themselves and then our fabulous parent volunteers helped clean the rest of the inside out. Then the students put a piece of dry oasis in their pumpkin and stuck the items they had purchased into the oasis. Lastly, we put Spanish moss around the green oasis. The students were very proud of their arrangements and there was not a bad one amongst the group!
After each child built their centerpiece they had to work with their table to make a group centerpiece that we donated to Meals on Wheels. We talked about how it was nice to do something for others without getting anything in return.
We are all looking forward to making our holiday centerpieces in December!
